In an indirect jibe towards Indian senior players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, former England captain Kevin Pietersen used Ricky Ponting's famous quote to highlight how a batting average below 35 in international cricket is unacceptable. This comes after Kohli and Rohit failed to score a total of 100 runs in 6 innings during the home Test series defeat against New Zealand.
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have been at the receiving end since India got whitewashed in the 3-game Test against New Zealand. While Virat Kohli scored 93 runs in 6 innings with an average of 15.50, captain Rohit Sharma could muster only 91 runs and a 15.17 average in 6 innings.
As seniors, both the players were expected to take responsibility. But their weakness against spin was brutally exposed as Kiwis registered a historic series sweep victory.
Kevin Pietersen takes 'Average' jibe on Rohit, Kohli
Having said that, former England captain Kevin Pietersen used social media to troll Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma with an indirect message.
Kevin quoted Ricky Ponting's ideology where he expressed that no batter was encouraged to play cricket during his tenure if their average was below 35. Pietersen noted that Ponting's ideology is a fact. While he didn't name Kohli and Rohit, the 'average' jibe was self explanatory.
Besides cricket experts, BCCI is also unhappy with seniors' downfall. As per rumours, the selectors could drop at least two seniors from the Test team after the Border Gavaskar Trophy, especially if India fails to qualify for the WTC 2025 finals. Virat, Rohit, Ashwin and Jadeja remain under scanner as the BGT tour begins from November 22.
Gavaskar advises Rohit, Kohli to play warm-up game in Australia
The stakes for the upcoming 5-game Test series is higher than ever, especially for Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. With their form nowhere close to being satisfactory, Sunil Gavaskar advised them to play a warm up game in Australia ahead of the Perth Test. He added that practising against full-time bowlers will help them regain confidence as adapting to Australian conditions is a different ballgame.
