‘Rohit Sharma Bhai…’ - Tilak Varma Gives His Verdict On MI's Captaincy Row

India and Mumbai Indians batter Tilak Varma is grateful to have received support from his childhood idol, Rohit Sharma, since his early days in the IPL. He also expressed feeling fortunate to play under Rohit Sharma and adds that he wants to play freely whenever given an opportunity.

Varma's breakthrough into the Indian team came after an impressive run with the bat in the IPL 2023, where he scored 343 runs in 11 matches, averaging 42.88 with a strike rate of 164.11.

In an interview with The Hindu, Varma emphasized his focus on playing and fulfilling any role assigned to him by the team. 

"I have been doing what my franchise, Mumbai Indians, has been looking for from my side. Focusing on the team’s needs and trying to be consistent. Whatever role I am assigned, I am ready for the challenge," Varma stated.

Expressing gratitude towards Mumbai Indians for their consistent support, Varma acknowledged the team's backing from the beginning, which has boosted his morale. He highlighted the comfort of playing under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, whom he idolized since childhood. 

“Thankfully, Mumbai Indians has been a great franchise for me, always backing me right from the start, mostly playing me in the eleven which is itself a huge morale-booster. With Rohit Sharma bhai being such a successful captain and also my childhood idol, I have been in such a comfort zone, and I am lucky to have played under him,”  he explained.

Currently leading Hyderabad, Varma has been brilliant with the bat. Very recently he scored a century against Nagaland in the Ranji Trophy Plate Group.

Looking ahead, Varma will aim for a breakthrough season in the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024) as strong performances in the tournament will be crucial for his selection in India's squad for the upcoming 2024 T20 World Cup. The global event is scheduled to be held in the West Indies and USA in June, and Varma must be keen to get a place in the World Cup squad.
