'Rather Get Run Out on Your Stomach Than on Your Feet': Neesham on Déjà Vu Dismissal vs Australia

In a nail-biting World Cup 2023 match against Australia in Dharamsala on Saturday, New Zealand all-rounder James Neesham was at the centre of the action as he attempted to guide his team to a victory.

Neesham draws parallels between WC 2019 final and Dharamsala match

Despite his incredible fighting effort, he was tragically run out for 58 runs off 39 balls. The close encounter saw the Kiwis fall short by just five runs, reminiscent of the heartbreak in the ICC World Cup 2019 final.

Speaking after the game, the dynamic all-rounder admitted that the manner of his dismissal brought back memories from that dramatic final two years ago. Neesham stated that he felt a sense of déjà vu from the run-out, indicating that it seemed eerily similar to the events from 2019.

"Actually, that (2019 final) was the first thing I thought of when I was coming off, that it's going to look very, very similar,” said Neesham as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

The 33-year-old further pointed out the importance of showing desperation in these critical junctures of the game. He believes that in such moments, it's preferable to be run out while making an all-out effort, diving, rather than being on one's feet and showing less urgency.

"I mean that's the nature isn't it? You want to be desperate, I suppose, in those situations, and you'd much rather get run out on your stomach than on your feet,” added the Auckland-born cricketer.

Earlier in the Dharamsala match, Neesham's fighting spirit was evident as he kept the Kiwis' hopes alive, especially after the departures of key players Rachin Ravindra and Mitchell Santner. Their exits had heightened the pressure with a soaring run rate. But he kept his side in the hunt before the unfortunate runout that saw the Blackcaps fall short by five runs.
