Netherlands stunned Bangladesh by 87 runs to register their second win of the 2023 World Cup. Playing a virtual dead-rubber at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata, Dutch captain Scott Edwards led his side’s run-scoring charge before bowling stalwart Paul van Meekeren chipped away with four crucial wickets, including a three-wicket burst in the middle overs.

After the match, Edwards praised his team’s bowling performance and signified the importance of the outcome for Netherlands cricket in the context of the tournament’s semi-finals race.

Scott Edwards exults after historic win over Bangladesh

Netherlands, having fought their way into the 2023 World Cup with stunning wins over West Indies and Scotland at the Qualifiers in Zimbabwe earlier this year, have now upstaged two Test-playing giants at the grand stage.

Mere weeks after unsettling South Africa’s rampage, the Dutchmen foiled Bangladesh’s party by crashing their World Cup 2023 semi-finals hope in Kolkata.

Netherlands skipper Scott Edwards exulted in his latest glory against Shakib Al Hasan and co. by praising team’s all-round bowling performance and fielding efforts. The cricketer, who top-scored with 68 in the first innings, hailed new-ball bowlers Aryan Dutt and Logan van Beek for getting early wickets and commended the lower-order for taking them to 229 following his dismissal.

During the post-match presentation, Edwards said:

"Was speaking to a couple of guys. Was aiming at 220+. I got out at the wrong time. But the lower order got us there."

"The bowling unit is delivering and we were awesome. Aryan Dutt, Logan all were good. The team getting better and the system is getting better. The fielding was good as well."

Scott Edwards also signified the importance of the win in the context of the tournament and is still hopeful of an outside chance of securing a spot in the semi-finals. He added:

"This win means a lot for us. We will try and win games and our goal is to be in the semis. The goal looks tricky but we will try and win more games and be right up there. Proud of the lads performance."

Netherlands, currently placed at number eight on the World Cup 2023 points table, need to win each of their remaining three fixtures to entertain any chances of a top four finish.

Scott Edwards and co. will now face an equally-insurgent Afghanistan unit on November 3 in Lucknow.
