India's failure to defend 371 runs against England in the Leeds Test, handing the hosts a 1-0 series lead, has drawn criticism, particularly focused on costly fielding lapses. Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal faced significant scrutiny after dropping three crucial catches in the slip cordon and gully during the match.
Jaiswal's errors proved pivotal. He dropped Ollie Pope and Harry Brook in England's first innings and later failed to hold a chance offered by Ben Duckett. Australia's women's team captain, Alyssa Healy, commented on Jaiswal's drops and how India can manage it.
Healy Sharply Criticises Jaiswal's Fielding in Gully
Speaking to the LiSTNR Sport podcast, Healy questioned Yashasvi Jaiswal's suitability for the gully position and recommended better fielders in place of the young opener.
“I reckon he’s a bit of a a makeshift gully. I don’t think he needs to be at gully. It’s a bad place to feel. Put your Jadeja or someone there. Put your best fielder in gully or your biggest guy like Cam Green. Yeah, because they can swallow it,” Healy said, as quoted by The Indian Express.
Speaking of the 2nd Test, Healy however, showed faith in India coming back to their fielding form with Nitish Reddy back in the Playing XI.
“Nitish Ready is coming back into the team and is gonna go straight into the cordon and Jaiswal’s already been moved out of there just from what people are watching the practice sessions are looking like. So, they’re already trying to make those changes and look at ways that they could be better,” Healy added.
Coach ten Doeschate Defends Jaiswal
Meanwhile, India's assistant coach, Ryan ten Doeschate, confirmed the plan to manage Yashasvi Jaiswal's confidence ahead of the second Test.
“We always want depth in the catching department. In England, you’re always going to have four catches at some stage in the game. Yashasvi has been a very good catcher for us. We want to manage his confidence. Maybe just give Yashasvi a break from catching at gully. His hands are quite sore. We want to get his confidence back up,” Doeschate added.
Meanwhile, India is looking good at Edgbaston as Day 2's play began. India ended Day 1 on a strong note with skipper Shubman Gill flaunting a ton and leading from the front. With Shubman Gill and Ravindra Jadeja continuing Day 2, the Men in Blue hopes for a good total in their first innings.
