The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has appointed Ankeet Chavan, a former cricketer banned for life over the 2013 IPL spot-fixing scandal, as head coach of its Under-14 team. This decision has drawn significant attention given Chavan's history alongside players like S. Sreesanth.

Chavan was one of three Rajasthan Royals players initially banned for life by the BCCI in 2013. Although a Delhi court acquitted the players in 2015 due to lack of evidence, the BCCI maintained the ban until 2021, when it was reduced to seven years, allowing Chavan's return to cricket two years ago.

Chavan Reflects on Fresh Start After Ban-Lift By BCCI

In an interview with The Indian Express, Chavan expressed his eagerness for this "second innings". He also shared how he would approach the new coaching opportunity.

“This is a second innings for me, and I am eagerly looking forward to it. There is always a chance to make a comeback in life. I want to thank the Mumbai Cricket Association for putting their faith in me. Coaching has always been on my mind, and I am aware of the challenges that lie ahead. At the Under-14 level, I want to focus on developing the players’ basic techniques to help them improve their game," Chavan said, as quoted by The Indian Express.

Following his ban, Ankeet Chavan remained involved in the sport, playing club cricket for Mumbai's Karnataka Sports Club and successfully completing the BCCI's Level-1 coaching exam. His playing career included 18 first-class, 20 List A, and 13 IPL matches before the scandal.

MCA Confirms Coaching Line-Up for 2025-26 Season

The MCA announced the appointment alongside other coaching and selection roles. Omkar Salvi will continue as head coach of the senior Ranji Trophy team, a role he held last season which also led to his position as bowling coach for the Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Former India cricketer Sandeep Patil remains chairman of the selection committee. Harshad Khadiwale was named the new head coach of the Maharashtra senior team.
