Shubman Gill failed to convert his cautious start against England on the second morning of the first match at Hyderabad, as he was holed out at midwicket to gift visiting spinner Tom Hartley his maiden Test wicket. Gill, who resumed his innings on Day 2 at 14*, added just nine more runs to his overnight score as Team India slipped to 159-3 in pursuit of England’s 246.

The 24-year-old batting prodigy also failed to list a single notable score throughout India’s two-match Test series in South Africa earlier this month, with his latest failure further extending his poor run-of-form in the format.

Indian cricketer and expert commentator Dinesh Karthik has pointed out Gill’s recent struggles with the bat, and believes that the youngster is playing with a sense of reluctance owing to the pressure of losing his spot in the team.

The Indian wicketkeeper-batter has pointed out that Gill is going through a tough phase in Test cricket, as evidenced by the latter’s recent run in the format.

While speaking on Cricbuzz, Karthik claimed that the pressure has taken over Gill, who is now playing with a sense of reluctance and fear of losing his spot in the team. He said:

“You can see pressure has gone to Shubman Gill. He knows if he fails a couple of times, his career, for the moment, could be on the line. So, you could see that reluctance," Karthik stated.

In his last 10 Test innings, Gill has managed to tally just 173 runs at a substandard average of 19.22. He career average also dropped below 30 owing to his listless run in the format off late.

The 128 runs he conjured against Australia back in March 2023 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad marks the most recent occasion where he crossed the 50-run barrier in his career.
