The incident occurred in the 27.6 overs when Joe Root tossed the ball up on the stumps. Gill, attempting to go big down the ground, miscued the shot, sending the ball high into the air. In a stroke of luck for Gill, the ball landed safely in the long-on region.

However, the real twist unfolded as Ben Stokes, stationed at a widish mid-on position, found himself completely unaware of the ball's trajectory. Apologizing to Root, Stokes was seen hovering in the field, clueless about the whereabouts of the ball. Had he spotted it, the catch would likely have been a straightforward opportunity for the English all-rounder.
