‘Playing Under MS Dhoni Is A Privilege’ - Maheesh Theekshana On MS Dhoni & CSK

In an exclusive interview with Cricket.com, Sri Lankan mystery spinner Maheesh Theekshana shared insights into his cricketing journey, highlighting his memorable stint with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and the privilege of playing under the mentorship of MS Dhoni.

Theekshana's entry into the Indian Premier League (IPL) fold occurred when the then four-time IPL winner, Chennai Super Kings, secured his services for INR 70 lakh ahead of the 2022 IPL.

Theekshana, whose journey began at St. Benedict’s College in Colombo, expressed his gratitude for the opportunities he received at CSK, especially for winning the IPL title in 2023.

He remarked, 

"Playing under MS Dhoni is a privilege, especially at a young age. He has faith in every bowler - we are also getting confidence, even if we are going for runs. I had the chance to learn from experienced players like Ambati Rayudu and DJ Bravo, which has greatly enhanced my game."


Contrary to the perception of Dhoni being a serious figure, Theekshana revealed, 

"Dhoni isn't always serious; he also makes jokes. He maintains a calm demeanor and allows players to express themselves on the field."

Regarding Dhoni's approach to entrusting responsibilities, Theekshana explained,

 "Dhoni didn’t explicitly inform me about bowling at the death overs initially. He gradually entrusted me with various phases of the game, showing confidence in every bowler."

Reflecting on his IPL career, Theekshana has played 22 matches, securing 23 wickets with an average of 28.39 and conceding 7.77 runs per over. His best individual performance stands at 4/33.

Looking ahead to IPL 2024, Theekshana's acquisition by CSK for Rs 70.00 Lac in the auction 2024 has sparked anticipation among fans. With his talent and Dhoni's mentorship, cricket enthusiasts eagerly await his performance in the upcoming season.
