'Bit Surreal' - Delhi Capitals' Head Coach Ricky Ponting On His New Role In MLC 2024

Ahead of the second edition of the Major League Cricket, Washington Freedom has officially appointed Ricky Ponting as their head coach. The franchise took to its Twitter handle to share the development. Ricky Ponting too looked quite thrilled with the opportunity and expressed his gratification for a new role.

“Get ready for a cricket revolution! With @RickyPonting leading, Washington Freedom is set to transform American cricket. As we dive into MLC Season 2, expect groundbreaking plays. Let the games begin!” the franchise wrote on their Twitter handle. 


Ricky Ponting’s appointment as the head coach of the Washington Freedom has come as a huge boost to the development of the league. He replaces his long-time mentor, Greg Shipperd in the upcoming edition. Under Shipperd, Washington Freedom finished third last season. 

Notably, Ponting is also plying his trade as the head coach of the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League. It has been learned that the Australian legendary skipper will take on the coaching duties in both leagues, simultaneously. 

Ricky Ponting is hailed as one of the greatest cricketers ever to play the game. He is the most successful captain in the history of the game. Ponting led Australia to win the 2003 and 2007 ICC World Cup, besides winning the 2006 and 2009 ICC Champions Trophies. He was also the member of the Australian Cricket Team that won the 1999 World Cup. 

Ponting is the highest run-scorer for Australia in both Test cricket as well as ODI cricket. The 49-year-old scored 13,378 runs in Tests and 13,704 runs in ODI cricket in his international cricket career. 

Besides, he is one of the astute thinkers of the game. Often we have seen make him wonderful predictions while sitting in the commentary box. There’s no doubt that Washington Freedom are only going to benefit from Ricky Ponting’s services in the upcoming edition. 

Earlier, Ricky Ponting had expressed his delight in working with Washington Freedom in a US-based franchise cricket tournament. He also expressed his gratitude for taking over from his mentor for the head coach duty. 

"I'm extremely excited to be joining the Washington Freedom in 2024," Ponting said in a statement.


 "Cricket is really on the rise in the US and I'm looking forward to being involved in Major League Cricket. I've been impressed by everyone involved at Washington Freedom, and, while it's a bit surreal to be replacing my mate Greg Shipperd, there's probably no one better to set up a successful franchise. I'm ready to build on his work as we look towards the coming season." 

In the inaugural season, MI New York emerged triumphant, conquering the formidable Seattle Orcas by 7 wickets in the final. The second edition of the Major Cricket League is set to start days after the conclusion of the T20 World Cup 2024. The official schedule of the same hasn’t been announced yet.
