Australia's cricket team faces another setback as Mitchell Marsh, the T20I captain, tests positive for COVID-19 just before the commencement of the 3-match T20I series against the West Indies. Marsh becomes the third Australian player infected with the virus during the ongoing Australian summer.

Marsh Tests Covid+

Despite testing positive, Marsh has been cleared to participate in the first T20I match against the West Indies at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart on February 9. However, he will have to adhere to strict protocols, including using a separate dressing room and maintaining a safe distance from teammates during the match, as per Cricket Australia guidelines.

The all-rounder's positive test adds to the list of Australian players affected by COVID-19 this season, including Josh Inglis and Cameron Green, who also played with the virus earlier. Green, who tested positive before the second Test against the West Indies, had to maintain distance during matches and celebrations.

Despite these challenges, Marsh's leadership has been recognized, with him being the unofficial captain of the T20I side after Aaron Finch's retirement. His recent performances earned him the prestigious Allan Border Medal during the awards ceremony on January 31.

The upcoming T20I series against the West Indies and New Zealand holds significance for Australia, especially with the T20 World Cup 2024 scheduled for June. Although Marsh's role as permanent captain in the format has not been officially announced, his leadership in upcoming matches suggests he's a strong candidate for the mega event.
