Sanju Samson's return to first-class cricket did not go as planned. The wicketkeeper-batter, representing India D in the Duleep Trophy 2024, struggled to make an impact during their second-round clash against India A in Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh. On Friday morning, Samson managed only five runs before being dismissed, leaving fans disappointed and critics vocal.

Samson's Stay At The Crease Cut Short By A Reckless Shot

After opener Yash Dubey's departure on Day 2, Samson arrived at the crease, hoping to make the most of the opportunity. He opened his account with a boundary, confidently dispatching a short-pitched delivery from fast bowler Aaqib Khan. However, Aaqib got his revenge shortly after. Another short delivery tempted Samson into a pull shot, but he mistimed it, resulting in a catch by Prasidh Krishna at mid-on. His brief stay at the crease added to the frustration of his supporters.

Samson wasn’t initially included in any of the four Duleep Trophy squads. However, he was called up to the India D side as a replacement for Ishan Kishan, who was ruled out due to a groin injury. Unfortunately, Samson's underwhelming performance gave his critics more fuel.

Samson Faces Social Media Backlash

Fans and critics took to social media, particularly on X (formerly Twitter), to express their disappointment. Many felt that Samson had squandered a crucial opportunity, especially after not being selected for India’s Test squad for the upcoming series against Bangladesh.

Despite India D's decision to bowl first, India A's innings were salvaged by Shams Mulani, who scored 89, and Tanush Kotian, who added 53. They built a crucial 91-run partnership for the 7th wicket after the team had struggled at 93/5.

However, India D's innings started challengingly, losing six wickets. Khaleel Ahmed was pivotal for India A, dismissing India D captain Shreyas Iyer for a duck and  Atharva Taide for four runs.
