The Indian Premier League has always entertained fans with the best thrills, and some of the captains have made their own legacy. As fans passionately back their teams, the debate over who’s the ultimate IPL skipper often sparks lively rivalries.
But honestly, it's just not the fans, as former cricket legends often weigh in too. With IPL 2025 delivering non-stop drama, Tom Moody has now joined the conversation by naming his favourite IPL skipper.
Who Is Leading Moody’s Favourite Captain’s List?
Since the inaugural season of IPL in 2008, the tournament has featured some of the iconic captains who took their teams to their teams into new heights. From MS Dhoni to Rohit Sharma, the list is long. In a recent discussion on ESPNcricinfo, former Australian great Tom Moody was asked to rank IPL captains, and his No. 1 pick grabbed the attention.
Taking the Chennai Super Kings’ reins in 2008, MS Dhoni led the franchise to five IPL trophy wins. As a captain, he led the team in 226 matches and secured 133 wins. So, when Tom Moody named his greatest-ever IPL skipper, he didn’t hesitate as Captain Cool was his clear No. 1.
“I am happy with my selection and MS Dhoni. I think he is number one because of the number of trophies, but also the fact that he's had squads that haven't been the strongest in the tournament,” Moody said.
Who Are Chasing Dhoni In Moody's List?
As the tournament featured some of the greatest captains over the years, picking six of them was tricky, but Moody picked it as efficiently as he used to sixes in the stands. After picking Dhoni as his number 1 choice, he named Rohit Sharma as his second favourite. The Hitman’s leadership saw Mumbai Indians clinch five IPL titles, solidifying his spot among the greats.
Former KKR skipper Gautam Gambhir, who led the team to two trophy wins, was Moody’s third pick. As his number 4 captain, Moody picked Shreyas Iyer, who is dominating the IPL with his captaincy. Moody’s fifth choice surprised many, as he named Virat Kohli, recognizing his immense impact as a skipper, followed by SRH skipper Pat Cummins rounding out the top six.
