MS Dhoni’s future in IPL has been a topic of discussion for the last few years. In the IPL 2025, fans got a rare treat watching Captain Dhoni take the field when Gaikwad was sidelined due to injury.

After Dhoni’s captaincy came under scrutiny along with his personal performances, former Indian player Atul Wassan stepped up to defend Captain Cool, making a bold prediction about his IPL future.

Captain MS Dhoni Is Still Iconic, Says Wassan

In the ongoing IPL season, fans were treated to a surprise as MS Dhoni donned the captaincy hat again. But the season didn’t unfold as per the expectation as CSK ended the season in the last position of the points table with just eight points. To make matters worse, Dhoni’s own form dipped, drawing sharp criticism and raising more questions about his future.

Amidst the criticism, former Indian cricketer Atul Wassan backed the Captain Cool. While talking in the Bails and Banter Show on OTT Play, he argued that Dhoni remains as iconic a leader as ever and should be judged by the team he was given, not just the results.

“A captain is as good as the team he gets; if I give the Zimbabwe team to Clive Lloyd, he won't be good either. Dhoni's captaincy should be rated based on the team he got; when he had the team in the past, we all know what he did. In my opinion, captaincy is at times overrated,” he said.

Will MS Dhoni Be Back In The IPL 2026?

MS Dhoni’s IPL future has been one of the hottest talking points in recent years, and with CSK bowing out in the group stage this season, the chatter has only intensified. While reflecting on his, Wassan made a big claim on Dhoni’s future, stating Captain Cool will be back again in the next year.

“Dhoni is CSK, and CSK is Dhoni. CSK could have been doing good or not alongside Dhoni, but he is still recovering money for the franchise. Dhoni knows that his best days are gone, but he is still playing and facing the criticism. It shows how much attached he is to the franchise. Otherwise, why would someone who has achieved everything put himself in this situation? And I believe he would be up next year as well, despite not being at his 100 percent, “ he said.

As speculation swirls, Dhoni was asked the big question about retirement. But in true Captain Cool style, he hit it out of the park. The legend old that he still has enough time to think about it before the next season.
