In an interview with RevSportz, former BCCI president and cricketer Sourav Ganguly defended Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir. He opined that criticism on Gambhir’s vocal demeanour is unfair as it is too early to judge his coaching tenure.

Head coach Gautam Gambhir’s straight talk in a press conference days after India got whitewashed at home against New Zealand wasn’t received warmly by fans and analysts. Many deemed him unfit for public speaking, while others also raised questions about his competency as a coach.

After two shambolic losses against Sri Lanka and New Zealand, Gautam Gambhir is facing a tough challenge against Australia. The Border-Gavaskar Trophy will likely determine the future roadmap for him.

Ganguly backs Gambhir's straight talk

Meanwhile, former Indian cricketer Sourav Ganguly came to Gautam Gambhir’s defence. In an interview with Boria Majumdar of RevSportz, Ganguly advised critics to show some patience and let Gambhir be himself.

He explained that Gambhir is a fighter and he hasn’t changed since the time he led KKR to an IPL title in 2024. While Gautam was hailed for his coaching style then, a couple of series losses has suddenly turned him into a villain.

"All I will say is let him be. I saw some criticism on what he said in the press conference. It is the way he is. Let him be. When he won the IPL, he was the same. You were going gaga over him. Just because he has lost three Test matches and a one-day series against Sri Lanka, the straight talk has not been looked at nicely. But that is the way he is," Ganguly said.

Moreover, Ganguly added that Gautam Gambhir is fierce, and his press conference was completely acceptable since he is taking on a similar aggressive side to Australia.

"And why not? Australians, from the time I have watched cricket, they have been tough for you. They have played their cricket that way, whether it was [Steve] Waugh, [Ricky] Ponting or [Matthew] Hayden. So, there is nothing wrong with what Gambhir has said. That is the way he is, and he fights. He competes, so let us give him a chance. It has just been two-three months, and you are passing judgement on him."

Gambhir ignores WTC pressure

Before departing to Australia, Gautam Gambhir attended a press conference and revealed that the World Test Championship is not on India’s mind. Their sole focus is to win the Border-Gavaskar Series against Australia. Notably, India has to win 4 of the next 5 Tests to qualify for WTC 2025 finals. Hence, that scenario will remain on the back of the players’ mind throughout the series.
