India's star batter Shreyas Iyer has been the talk of the town in the last few days after he was left out of the Asia Cup's 15-member squad. The selectors and the apex cricket board of India received a lot of flak for their decision as the Punjab Kings batter wreaked havoc in the IPL.

Amid the backlash, a fresh report took over the internet that the BCCI is planning something big for the PBKS captain. The report added that the apex cricket board is looking to appoint Shreyas Iyer as the next ODI captain after Rohit Sharma steps down from his role.

BCCI Refutes Reports Of Iyer As Next Captain

Contrary to reports that Shubman Gill might be the new all-format captain, the latest development revealed that Iyer is set to pip Gill as the next ODI captain and might lead the Men in Blue in the 2027 ODI World Cup.

However, in the latest events, the BCCI has broken the silence on the matter, and a report from Hindustan Times revealed that they spoke to secretary Devajit Saikia, who was clueless about the development of Iyer replacing Rohit Sharma.

“That’s news to me. There have been no such discussions,” remarked Saikia in conversation with Hindustan Times.

Shreyas Iyer's Father Questions Son's Ouster From The Team

"I don’t know what else Shreyas has to do to make it to the Indian T20 team. He has been performing so well in the IPL year after year, from Delhi Capitals to Kolkata Knight Riders to Punjab Kings, and that too as a captain. He even captained KKR to the IPL title in 2024, and led PBKS to the final this year. I’m not saying make him the Indian captain, but at least select him in the team," remarked Iyer's father Santosh Iyer to TOI.

Notably, Iyer is most likely to be picked for upcoming Test series against West Indies, which starts following the conclusion of Asia Cup 2025.
