Former Indian cricketer Pragyan Ojha is all set to join the BCCI as a national selector. According to reports, he is likely to become part of the committee led by Ajit Agarkar.
As per the Times of India, Ojha is expected to take over as the national selector from the South Zone, replacing S. Sharath. Sharath has almost completed his four-year term, which is the maximum time allowed under BCCI rules.
Interestingly, Sharath might not be leaving the selection scene altogether. Reports suggest he could return as the chief selector of the junior selection committee, a position he held before 2023.
Ajit Agarkar’s Tenure Likely To Be Extended Until 2026
Meanwhile, chief selector Ajit Agarkar’s contract is expected to be extended until June 2026, according to reports. In fact, the board has indicated that it is pleased with the current group of selectors and might make just one change by bringing in Ojha to replace Sharath.
“The BCCI will be calling for fresh applications going ahead. However, it is unclear whether the board will retain Das and Banerjee. The board is reportedly pleased with the current bunch and only one potential change could be made to the panel,” Indian Express report mentioned.
Agarkar has certainly justified the board’s faith in him. Since taking charge in July 2023, he has guided Indian cricket through a period of big changes and major success. Under his leadership, India won T20 World Cup in 2024 and ICC Champions Trophy in 2025. The team also reached the final of ODI World Cup in 2023.
Currently, the senior selection committee consists of Ajit Agarkar, SS Das, Subroto Banerjee, Ajay Ratra, and S. Sharath. However, with Sharath’s term ending, the BCCI is expected to make the official change during its annual general meeting in September.
Agarkar’s tenure has also seen smooth leadership transitions within the team. The selectors appointed Shubman Gill as the new Test captain and handed the T20I captaincy to Suryakumar Yadav.
Moreover, the team has successfully managed the gradual retirement of legends like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin. Kohli and Rohit now only play ODIs, while Ashwin has retired from all formats.
