The women’s cricket world bid adieu to another legendary bowler as veteran Indian spinner Gouher Sultana announced her retirement from all forms of cricket. At a time when women’s cricket was still establishing itself in the subcontinent, Sultana emerged as a leader, creating a legacy that inspires generations. In a heartfelt Instagram post, she announced her decision to step away.
“After years of wearing the Indian jersey with pride, passion, and purpose, the time has come to pen down the most emotional note of my cricketing journey. With a heart full of memories and eyes welled with gratitude, I announce my retirement from all forms of the game,” she wrote.
“To have represented India at the highest level - in World Cups, tours, and battles that tested both skill and spirit - has been the greatest honour of my life. Every wicket taken, every dive in the field, every huddle with my teammates has shaped the cricketer and the person I am today. There were days of triumph and nights of introspection. Injuries, comebacks, heartbreaks, and high-fives - the game gave me everything. In her decade-long career, Gouher Sultana shared the field with legends like Mithali Raj and Jhulan Goswami, lifting Indian cricket to new heights. As she was bidding farewell to the game, she acknowledged his teammates, coaches, and support staff for their unwavering support.
“To my teammates - thank you for the camaraderie and the countless shared battles. To the coaches, selectors, support staff, and administrators who believed in me - thank you for giving wings to my ambition. To my mother and sister - you were my anchor, my storm, and my calm,” she said.

Making her debut in the ODI format in 2008 against Pakistan Women, she made herself a star of the limited-overs format with time. With her brilliance, wicket-taking ability, and domination, she became one of the most trusted spinners of the women’s side. In 50 ODI matches, she secured 66 wickets with an average of 19.39.
In 2014, she registered her best performance against Sri Lanka, picking four wickets while conceding just 4 runs in 8 overs. In 37 T20Is, she secured 29 wickets with an economy rate of 5.73.
Along with that, she represented India Women in the 2009 and 2013 ODI World Cups. Being featured in India’s jersey last time in 2014, she made a comeback in the WPL in 2024. As she retires, her remarkable career will continue to inspire countless budding cricketers across the nation.
