India's 15-member squad for the Asia Cup 2025 has been announced, and there has been a lot of criticism over the exclusion of Shreyas Iyer. The Mumbai cricketer has performed in almost all tournaments he has played in recent times and took the Punjab Kings to the final of IPL 2025.
He also scored over 600 runs at a strike-rate of 175, and thus it was expected that he would get a place in the side. However, selectors decided against it and did not even select him in the reserves list. Since then, a lot of cricket pundits have slammed the move, and now, Shreyas Iyer's father has also opened up on his son's exclusion while speaking to Times of India.
Shreyas Iyer's Father Talks About His Son's Exclusion
Shreyas Iyer's father expressed his frustration by saying that he now has no idea what his son has to do to make it to the Indian T20I team. He added that Shreyas Iyer has performed well in almost every year and stated that he led KKR to the IPL title and Punjab Kings to the final in IPL 2025.
Santosh Iyer requested the selectors to at least select him in the team even if you are not looking him as a T20I captain.
"I don’t know what else Shreyas has to do to make it to the Indian T20 team. He has been performing so well in the IPL year after year, from Delhi Capitals to Kolkata Knight Riders to Punjab Kings, and that too as a captain. He even captained KKR to the IPL title in 2024, and led PBKS to the final this year. I’m not saying make him the Indian captain, but at least select him in the team," Santosh Iyer told TOI.
Shreyas Iyer Doesn't Blame Anyone
Shreyas' father applauded his son, though, and added that he doesn't show dissent despite things not going in his favour. He added that his son just says that it is luck and he can't do anything now. He stated that Shreyas Iyer doesn't show his emotions but deep inside he would be disappointed.
“However, let me tell you that even if he’s left out of the Indian team, he doesn’t show dissent on his face. He’ll just say: ‘Mera naseeb hai (it’s my luck)! You can’t do anything now.’ He’s always cool and calm. He doesn’t blame anybody. Deep inside, he must be naturally disappointed.”
It would be interesting to see how Shreyas Iyer's career pans out from hereon. He was India's leading run-scorer in the Champions Trophy 2025 and could be next seen in action in the ODI series against Australia in October.
