Former Indian and ex-KKR opener Aakash Chopra has given his take over Punjab Kings’ continuous persistence with struggling Australian batter Glenn Maxwell this IPL 2025 season. In six innings so far, Maxwell has managed to tally just 48 runs at a dismal average of eight and a strike rate of below 100. Moreover, the hard-hitting Australian accrued 30 of those runs in a single innings against Rajasthan Royals in Mullanpur earlier this month.

Chopra recently stated that he could not help but wonder if the Punjab Kings management will give the 36-year-old another opportunity in the playing XI for their upcoming all-important match against the CSK.

Aakash Chopra on Glenn Maxwell’s struggles

While speaking on his YouTube channel, Aakash Chopra praised Punjab Kings opening batters Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya for their explosive form this IPL 2025 season. Chopra added that while captain Shreyas Iyer is also scoring runs, he expects the senior Indian cricketer to perform even better. He said:

“Shreyas Iyer scored a few runs in the last match, but you expect a bigger knock from him. This team has the most exciting opening combination. Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya, the two uncapped Indians, are doing really well.”

Aakash Chopra also took this opportunity to give his take over Punjab Kings’ continuous persistence with underperforming Glenn Maxwell in the playing XI. The prominent commentator claimed that the franchise has already tried everything, only for Maxwell to keep struggling.

“I have got no idea what they will do with Maxi, because they have tried everything, but the guy is not performing. If he is not performing, I don't know how they will persist with him, or will they play Marcus Stoinis because Marcus Stoinis played a mighty knock at this ground? So maybe that is what you want to do.”

Punjab Kings is currently ranked fifth on the IPL 2025 points table with five wins and three defeats from nine matches. They will now face bottom-placed Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in match 49 of the IPL 2025 season in Chennai on Wednesday, April 30.
