The World Test Championship (WTC) Final 2025 will be played between Australia and South Africa from June 11 to 15 at Lord’s in London. What’s special about this final is that India, for the first time, won’t be part of it. In the last two WTC finals, India made it to the summit clash, losing to New Zealand in 2021 and to Australia in 2023. But this time, they narrowly missed out.
Pat Cummins' Blunt Take On WTC Final
Reacting to this, Australian captain Pat Cummins made a blunt yet honest remark. Speaking to The Guardian, he said:
“In some ways you expect India to be around. England have been quite strong at home and New Zealand always seem to get to finals."
“But, the same case could be made for South Africa in ICC events. We just don’t see a lot of them in Test cricket but it’s nice and different to an Australia-India final,” Cummins added.
Cummins’ words clearly reflect how frequently India has been part of big finals. But this year, it’s South Africa’s turn to shine, after delivering consistent performances in red-ball cricket, even in tough overseas conditions.
Australia, the current WTC champions, are aiming to defend their title and become the first team ever to win back-to-back WTC trophies. South Africa, on the other hand, are hoping to win their first major ICC trophy in more than 20 years.
South Africa have topped the WTC 2023–25 points table and come into this match with seven wins in a row. Australia are also in great form, having won five of their last six Tests, including a huge series win against India at home.
This final is expected to be a thrilling contest between Cummins’ Australia and Temba Bavuma’s South Africa. It’s a golden chance for South Africa to rewrite their Test cricket history, especially since the team has mostly been known for white-ball success.
