On Monday, the Karnataka High Court gave a temporary relief to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and DNA Entertainment regarding the stampede that occurred at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. Both RCB and DNA Entertainment had filed petitions against a criminal case that was filed after the incident. The Bengaluru Police had named RCB as the first accused in the case.

The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), which manages the stadium, was also named as an accused. Both RCB and DNA Entertainment argued in court that they were wrongly accused. RCB claimed they were falsely involved in the case, while DNA Entertainment said the lack of police presence at the stadium led to the stampede and loss of lives.

The High Court postponed the case to Thursday, 12 June, and told police not to take any harsh action against RCB or DNA Entertainment until then.

Justice SR Krishna Kumar emphasised that no action should be taken until the matter is discussed further.

During the hearing, there was a heated debate between RCB's lawyer CV Nagesh and the Advocate General for Karnataka, Shashikiran Shetty. Nagesh argued that there was no solid case against RCB or DNA, and that the allegations were directed at all three parties involved, including KSCA. He also pointed out that the Chief Minister of Karnataka, Siddaramaiah, had invited people to RCB’s event.

“Except for one sentence, the entire FIR makes composite allegations against all three. There’s no independent case made out against RCB or DNA,” Nagesh said.

The stampede took place on June 4, when RCB celebrated their first-ever IPL title win with fans at their home ground in Bengaluru. The team had defeated Punjab Kings in the final held in Ahmedabad a day before.

After the incident, police arrested RCB’s marketing head Nikhil Sosale at the airport and also detained three DNA Entertainment executives. Sosale has now approached the High Court, saying his arrest was illegal and unfair. The stampede during the celebration tragically killed 11 people and injured many others.
