Shubman Gill fight at Lord's (Source:@academy_dinda/X.com)
In the six innings of India's ongoing tour of England, Shubman Gill has smashed over 600 runs and is the leading run-scorer from his country in a Test series in England.
However, he could only manage just 22 runs in the Lord's Test. It includes 16 in the first innings and six in the second. In the second innings, especially, the Indian captain looked tentative and was trapped in front by Brydon Carse.
Manjrekar Wants Shubman Gill To Understand His Own Style
Now, Sanjay Manjrekar has commented on Shubman Gill's failure through a post on his official X handle. The former Indian cricketer highlighted that Gill's struggle at the crease was due to the hostile nature of English players towards him in the second innings. It was England's reply to Shubman Gill's antics against Zak Crawley, an incident which inflated tensions at Lord's.
Manjrekar further adds that Shubman Gill should analyze what works better for him. He mentioned that Virat Kohli performed better when the opposition team went after him, while Dhoni was the opposite. So, Gill must also understand which side helps him bring out his best and act accordingly.
"Gill suddenly looking tentative last evening had a lot to do with the hostility he got at the crease from England. Virat performed better, the angrier he got. Dhoni the exact opposite. Gill must decide what gets the best out of him as batter, calmness or anger."
Thus, Manjrekar's comments clearly indicated that Shubman Gill should not try to be aggressive unnecessarily, if it ends up affecting his concentration in the wrong way.
However, Gill has just started off his captaincy tenure and has found decent success with the bat so far. India also won a Test match at Edgbaston, and so Gill is likely to keep doing what he has done so far, and Lord's is not the first time he has shown anger on the field.
The cricketer has shown aggression in previous Test matches too, and it would be interesting to see how he evolves as a captain and batter in future.
