‘Life Moving Fast For Shubman’ - Harsha Bhogle Reacts After Gill Replaces Pandya As GT Skipper

Gujarat Titans batsman Shubman Gill was appointed as team’s new captain after Hardik Pandya was relocated back to the Mumbai Indians camp during the IPL 2024 trading window. The Titans’ decision reaffirms Gill’s meteoric rise within Indian cricket, as the 24-year-old continues to make giant strides at the senior level.

However, according to expert commentator Harsha Bhogle, life is moving a “bit too fast” for the youngster. He is of the opinion that Gill should have spent at least a season as an understudy to Kane Williamson before landing the top Gujarat Titans role.

Bhogle believes Gill appointed captain too early

Harsha Bhogle praised Shubman Gill for his splendid year with the bat across all formats for Indian cricket. The expert commentator also believes the youngster should keep going forward, as he needs to fight for a spot in the Indian squad for the forthcoming Test series in South Africa and next year’s T20 World Cup in West Indies.

However, Bhogle is of the opinion that Gill should not have been appointed as Gujarat Titans skipper yet, but should have spent at least a year at the camp while learning the leadership attributes from Kane Williamson. According to the prominent commentator, a year under Williamson’s guidance would have prepared Gill to lead the Gujarat Titans from IPL 2025 onwards.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Bhogle said:

“I think life is moving a little too fast for Shubman Gill. He has had a great year as a batter and he needs to take that next step forward in the next few months with a test series in South Africa and a T20 World Cup where he has competition for his place. It might have benefitted him to be understudy to Kane Williamson for a year at GT with a view to being captain at IPL 2025.”

Shubman Gill joined Gujarat Titans in their inaugural IPL appearance back in 2022.

The dashing opening batsman was last seen in action for the Indian team during the recently-concluded 2023 World Cup at home. The cricketer scored 354 runs across nine innings and punched out match-winning half-centuries against Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and against New Zealand at the semi-finals.

The 24-year-old will likely be considered for team’s upcoming all-format tour to South Africa, slated to commence in December next month.
