'Yashasvi Jaiswal Is Upgraded Version Of Sehwag' - Childhood Coach Makes Bold Statement

Yashasvi Jaiswal's childhood coach Jwala Singh hailed his ward after his astonishing rise into prominence as India's opener in Tests and T20I cricket and went to the extent of calling him a mix of legends Virender Sehwag and Sourav Ganguly.

Jaiswal, who made a terrific Test match debut via the West Indies series with a century on his maiden outing in Dominica, has since also emerged as a top-order maverick for India in the shortest format, plundering his runs at a whopping strike rate of 177.9.

The young Mumbaikar produced his first fifty in T20Is against the Caribbean men and then made his maiden century in the format in Indian colours during the Asian Games in China before smashing the Aussies upon his return to India duties in the second match of the series in Thiruvananthapuram.

The ferocious hitting on display in the first powerplay as Jaiswal raced along to 53 off just 24 deliveries once again underlined his talent and promise as the coveted horse for the long haul across formats. A knock that earned him effusive praise from his childhood coach.

Speaking to the Times of India in an interview, Singh, who has shaped up Jaiswal's game a great deal and watched his journey since childhood from close quarters, said his ward is in fact an "upgraded version" of Sehwag in T20Is and likened his expanding off-side range to that of Ganguly.

"Sehwag of course is a very big player. When Sehwag was playing, there was not much T20 cricket. If you compare the amount of T20 cricket we play today to the ten years back, there's a lot of difference. Yashasvi is an upgraded version of Virender Sehwag because he plays all kinds of shots with very proper technique," Singh said.

"Yashasvi has a knack for multiple players. If you see his square cut, he hits like Sourav Ganguly. His offside game is like Sourav Ganguly. And his pull and cut are like Virender Sehwag. He is a mixture of the two legends - Sehwag and Ganguly."

"He is a fearless and upgraded version of Virender Sehwag. He plays shots fearlessly and attacks. He does not think about his wicket like a lot of people – start building the innings and they get a good start," the coach added.
