Ever since its inception, the Indian Premier League (IPL) has attracted big money, whether it be for the acquisition of a franchise or a player, the stakes have always been high.

However, while international and national players have earned massive cheques, the marquee Indian players such as Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, and Jasprit Bumrah have been contracted via deals behind closed doors and have not entered the auction pool.

Former India and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) player Robin Uthappa has opined that if the IPL did not have a salary cap, the likes of Sharma, Kohli, Yadav, and Bumrah could have gone for and exuberant amount, which could make the current highest paid amount look minuscule.

Australia's Mitchell Starc holds the record for being the highest-paid IPL player, earning INR 24.75 crore for one season, and will turn up for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) this season

Speaking to NEWS24 Sports, Uthappa claimed that Sharma, Kohli, Yadav, and Bumrah could have earned contracts worth INR 100 crore if the IPL governing board did not have caps in place to make the auction equal for all parties involved.

"Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah will go for 100cr if there's no salary cap in the IPL".

With IPL heading into a mega auction next year for the 2025 editions, several players could find themselves back in the pool, while few could be retained by franchises for an undisclosed amount, much like how Royal Challengers Bangalore kept Kohli and Mumbai Indians retained the likes Sharma, Bumrah and Yadav in 2022, respectively.

IPL chairman Arun Dhumal has indicated that IPL will permit franchises to retain 3-4 players ahead of the mega auction 2025.
