Karun Nair whacked an explosive 40-ball 89 against Mumbai Indians at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in match number 29 of the IPL 2025 season. Chasing 206 for a win and batting at number three, Nair clattered 12 fours and five huge sixes to unfurl his career-best IPL knock.
Notably, the match marked his first IPL outing since the 2022 edition of the tournament. Recording his 11th IPL half-century, the innings was also his first fifty-plus score in the Indian T20 carnival in nearly seven years, considering Nair listed his previous IPL fifty back in 2018.
Karun Nair undermines his knock vs Mumbai Indians
After the match, Karun Nair undermined his explosive innings, citing that he failed to take the Delhi Capitals past the finishing line. The cricketer said:
"There's no benefits in talking about that. I did play well, but my team lost the match, so it really doesn't matter. There's no value for me of such innings if my team can't win".
Batting at number three, Karun Nair arrived at the crease in only the second ball of the run-chase after the fall of Delhi Capitals opener Jake Fraser-McGurk for a first-ball duck. The 33-year-old kept the Capitals in the hunt by sharing a huge 119-run partnership for the second wicket with Abishek Porel (33 off 25).
Smearing 89 runs from just 40 balls with 12 fours and five sixes, Nair’s dismissal eventually led to a colossal Capitals’ collapse, as they slipped from 135-2 to 193 balls to fall 12 runs short of their target.
Apart from recording his magnum-opus IPL performance, on his tournament return after a gap of three seasons no less, Karun Nair also enjoyed a prolific domestic season for Vidarbha earlier this year. In six innings of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024-25, the cricketer plundered 255 runs at an average of 42.50.
Moreover, in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25 season, the forgotten Indian star topped the run-scoring charts by mounting 779 runs in eight innings at an astronomical average of 389.50.
