Sydney Sixers spinner Joel Davies decimated hosts Melbourne Stars in match number 27 of the BBL 2025-26 season at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in Melbourne. Bowling out his entire quota of four overs, the 22-year-old removed Stars opener Sam Harper and number three Campbell Kellaway, conceding just 15 runs in the process to claim astonishing figures of 2-15.

Fittingly bagging the ‘Player of the Match’ award after Sydney Sixers brushed Stars aside to secure a comprehensive six-wicket win, in-form Joel Davies is now uncertain of retaining his place in the team’s playing XI, with the return of Australia’s champion trio looming large.

Joel Davies wary of Steve Smith, Starc and Hazlewood’s return

The Sydney Sixers squad is set to get bolstered with the impending returns of champion Australian cricketers Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood. While Smith and Starc recently annihilated England 4-1 in the 2025-26 Ashes series, Hazlewood has attained full recovery after sustaining an injury and is set to join the Sixers ahead of next month’s 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.

Young and uncapped Joel Davies, who has fetched two successive ‘Player of the Match’ awards for the Sydney Sixers this week, jokingly stated that he is now feeling threatened to retain his place in the team after the return of the three senior men. While speaking during the post-match presentation ceremony after Sydney Sixers’ comprehensive win over Melbourne Stars, Joel Davies said: “I think I might be out of the team.”

Joel Davies has so far picked up 10 wickets in just six innings for the Sydney Sixers in the ongoing BBL 2025-26 season at an impressive bowling average of 10.30.

The cricketer has also made his presence felt with the bat by scoring a composed 35* from 26 balls in a match-winning cause earlier this week against Brisbane Heat.
