Pakistan's Babar Azam extended his drought in the Big Bash League as he fell prey to Marcus Stoinis in Sydney Sixers' recent clash against Melbourne Stars at the MCG. Opening the batting for the Sixers, Babar was dismissed for 14 runs off 17 balls, with Stoinis also giving him a fiery send-off on his way back to the pavilion.
Babar Azam-Marcus Stoinis face-off heats up BBL
The incident occurred in the seventh over of Sydney Sixers' innings when Babar Azam was trying to steady the ship for his team after the dismissal of Moises Henriques.
Chasing a modest 129-run target, the Sixers had a torrid start, losing skipper Henriques cheaply in the third over. However, the in-form Josh Philippe played a pivotal role in stabilising their innings, forming a quick 28-run stand, which Marcus Stoinis eventually broke by removing Babar.
From over the wicket, Stoinis bowled a good length delivery that jagged back into Babar Azam, trapping him in front of the stumps. As soon as the Melbourne Stars players appealed for a leg before, the umpire raised his finger, asking Babar to make his way back to the dugout.
However, as the Pakistani talisman was consulting on whether he could go upstairs to challenge the decision via DRS, Stoinis gave him a verbal send-off. The Australian allrounder was ecstatic upon getting Babar's prized breakthrough and expressed his emotions through the aggressive send-off.

As things panned out, Babar Azam didn't react to Stoinis' sledging, quietly honouring the on-field call and going back to the pavilion. Having said that, Marcus Stoinis' verbal response to the dismissal marked a crucial moment in the game, signifying the Australian allrounder's competitive spirit and Babar Azam's sportsmanship.
Babar Azam registers fifth failure in 7 BBL outings
Ace Pakistani batter Babar Azam was signed by the Sixers as one of the most high-profile overseas players. Although the Sixers had high expectations from him, Babar let them down with a persistent lean patch, managing four single-digit scores across seven outings.
After managing only eleven runs in his first two BBL matches, Babar Azam bounced back with a valiant half-century against Sydney Thunder. He was dismissed for two runs against the Stars before notching up a match-winning fifty in the Sixers' fifth BBL 2025-26 match against Melbourne Renegades.
However, the batter couldn't sustain the momentum in his subsequent appearances, scoring 16 runs in the next two matches. Thus, his mediocre performance against Melbourne Stars marked Babar's fifth failure in the ongoing BBL, turning his maiden stint into an embarrassment. Overall, he has managed 145 runs, including two half-centuries, at a modest average of 24.17 and a horrendous strike rate of 108.21.
It's worth noting that Babar Azam will likely be a part of Pakistan's T20 World Cup squad, which the PCB will announce soon. Therefore, his lean patch in the BBL is a concerning sign for Pakistan as they aim to break the slump and clinch their first T20 World Cup trophy in 17 years.
