Chennai Super Kings (CSK) head coach Stephen Fleming conceded his team’s struggles were justified after a six-wicket loss to Rajasthan Royals on Tuesday sealed their fate at the bottom of the IPL 2025 points table.
With only three wins in 13 matches, CSK’s campaign has been marred by inconsistent performances, culminating in a meek finish ahead of their final league game.
Fleming’s Blunt Assessment Of CSK's Struggles
In the RR clash at Delhi, chasing a strong start, CSK faltered in the death overs against RR’s disciplined bowling. Despite Shivam Dube’s 39 and MS Dhoni’s brief 16, the team collapsed from a promising position, managing just 17 runs in the last three overs to post 187/8.
“No, we obviously don’t like being down there [in the points table]. We wanted just a good performance. We’re trying to string some performances together… It’s probably fitting that we’re at the bottom. We’ve played that type of cricket, so you can’t hide away from it,” Fleming stated post-match as quoted by TOI.
The coach highlighted structural flaws in CSK’s batting, particularly their over-reliance on patching up innings.
“Our lower order is not right at this stage… A lot of the batting positions are determined by how well a start we have… We’ve been just patching innings up, really, rather than constructing good innings,” Fleming concluded.
Focus on Fixing Flaws
Stephen Fleming acknowledged the need for a revamp ahead of IPL 2025, stressing, “We’ve got some strong ideas for next year, so that all facets are covered.”
With their playoff hopes long dashed and below-par season performance with just 3 wins, CSK’s final match offers little more than a chance to salvage pride before regrouping for a stronger comeback in the next season.
