Kolkata Knight Riders have made furious claims out of spite for the new 120-minute rule that IPL introduced recently. KKR claimed that they could have been in the playoffs race if the new rule had been introduced earlier in the league.
KKR's CEO, Venky Mysore raised questions on the timing of the introduction of the rule since it came on May 20 via an email from IPL's chief operating officer Hemang Amin to the franchises.
Venky Mysore Slams Late Introduction Of IPL's New Rule
Venky Mysore voiced that the notice for the extension of extra time should have come before or on the day of IPL's resumption on May 17 after the India-Pakistan war de-escalated.
"While these mid-season changes to the rules may be necessary under the circumstances, one would have expected more consistency in the way such changes are being applied," Mysore said in his email, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
Notably, for the unaware, in an effort to complete a full 20-over match in case of rain interruptions, the IPL decided to add 120 minutes of extra time for the remainder of the matches on May 20.
Elaborating on the May 17 game that got washed out at Chinnaswamy and caused RCB and KKR to get 1 point each, Mysore critiqued the early abandonment.
"When the IPL re-started, it was clear that the first game on May 17 KKR vs RCB was at high risk of being interrupted due to rain in [Bengaluru]. The forecast was there for all to see. Not only was the game washed out but the additional 120 mins, now being applied may have provided a chance of at least a 5 over a side game," Mysore said.
Despite M. Chinnaswamy Stadium filling up with fans eager to pay tribute to home hero Virat Kohli, who recently retired from Test cricket, persistent rain throughout the evening prevented any play.
"The wash-out ended KKR's chances of making the playoffs. Such ad hoc decisions and inconsistencies of applying them are not appropriate for a tournament of this standing. I am sure you also understand why we feel aggrieved," Mysore added to the agony.
In the match, overs began to be lost from 8:30 PM, and although the cut-off time was 10:56 PM, the match was called off at 10:26 PM as the drizzle never stopped. With points distributed, it ultimately ended Kolkata Knight Riders' chances of making the playoffs.
