Why CSK should release Conway [Source: AP Photo]
Devon Conway was once an undisputed starter for the MS Dhoni led Chennai Super Kings, however, his downfall needs to be studied as the Kiwi opener has looked out of sorts this Indian Premier League season (IPL). The final nail in the coffin was his poor game awareness against the Rajasthan Royals.
In the match, Conway had a chance to redeem himself, but the left-handed batter failed to deliver and was dismissed for 10 off 8 balls. Perhaps time has come for the Super Kings to take a harsh decision and release Conway ahead of the IPL 2026 season and here's why.
1) No match-winning knocks in IPL 2025
While Conway played a huge part in CSK's title triumph in 2023, scoring 672 runs, this season, he has done the exact opposite and was also dropped after a string of poor performances.
Criterion | Data |
Matches | 4 |
Runs | 94 |
Strike rate | 123.68 |
Average | 23.50 |
(Conway stats in IPL 2025)
As the numbers tell the story, Conway only has 94 runs in the league this season, with a strike rate of 123, a stark contrast from his strike rate of 139.71. He has looked a pale shadow of his former self and as a result was dropped as well from several matches.
New openers already making noises
If Ruturaj Gaikwad is fit, he should directly fill in the opening slot from next season onwards. The team also has the next CSK star, Ayush Mhatre who is already making noises with his stellar IPL campaign. Also, with the likes of Urvil Patel and Shaik Rasheed in the ranks, CSK have plethora of batting options.
Hence, there is no need to have Conway occupy the overseas slot. Instead, by releasing him, CSK can fill in the loopholes which they have.
