Pat Cummins isn't as convinced with the persistent talks of Test cricket's decline as he said the dooms say is often exaggerated beyond the reality of the interest that the traditional format still generates amongst cricket lovers.

The Australian skipper confronted the question ahead of the New Year's Test in Sydney against Pakistan after two under-attended fixtures of the series in Perth and at MCG even for the marquee Boxing Day Test.

The dwindling spectator count at the height of the Test summer had caused worries for the experts as they felt reminded of the format's struggles to attract major crowds Down Under outside of the Ashes and India series.

Cummins Denounces Dooms Day Talks For Test Cricket

Apart from the dwindling crowds, the latest discussions on the fate and the future of Test cricket are also based on South Africa's shocking decision to send an understrength squad for next month's series in New Zealand.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) ensured they don't ruffle the feathers of IPL's billion-dollar franchises, who have invested heavily to secure the services of Proteas' key players at the second edition of the country's SA20 league.

"My hopes are that it's even stronger than it is now, in 10 years' time or 20 years' time," Cummins told the reporters.

"I think in some regards leading to this Test summer, some of the question marks were against Pakistan and West Indies. We've had two fantastic Test matches against Pakistan, really well supported, big crowds."

"So I don't think it's in as dramatic a decline as sometimes it gets spoken about. But I think there is an issue just with the amount of other cricket out there, obviously competition for talent is higher than it's ever been."

"I grew up absolutely loving Test cricket. I think it does go through phases. I know the South African team aren't sending their strongest side [to New Zealand]. I'm hoping it's a phase," he added.
