Jadeja, Mukesh In; Ashwin, Krishna Out: Ex-Indian Test Ace Demands Changes

Irfan Pathan suggested two critical changes in the playing XI for Team India to make ahead of the New Year's Test in Cape Town against South Africa, starting on Wednesday (January 3).

As the visitors strive to salvage pride by levelling the two-match series after a horrific defeat in Centurion, the former pacer came up with two important changes that the Rohit Sharma-led side should be making before the Newlands clash.

For Pathan, India should bring back premier all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja at his rightful slot at No.7 if he has recovered from a neck spasm which ruled the great cricketer out of the Boxing Day Test and play him instead of his spin twin Ravichandran Ashwin.

The ex-cricketer also suggested the inclusion of steady Bengal seamer Mukesh Kumar in the playing XI ahead of his Karnataka counterpart Prasidh Krishna, who struggled on his Test debut at the SuperSports Park.

Pathan Suggests Two Changes For India

While Ashwin controlled things nicely with the ball, taking 1/41 off his 19 overs, he failed to provide the same all-round utility that Jadeja does as a capable No.7 in all conditions and was dismissed for 8 & 0 in his two innings.

As for Prasidh, the speedster identified as the right cog in the wheel for South African conditions with his height and tall release, couldn't show any consistency and control with his lengths and was taken for a horrific 1/93 off 20 overs in India's only bowling effort.

"Ravindra Jadeja, if fit, should come back in the team. Ashwin did bowl well from what was expected out of him on that pitch but we missed Jadeja's control while batting at number 7 in Centurion," Pathan told Star Sports.

"If you're Rohit Sharma and you want to go with the same bowling attack, that's also fine. But if you're thinking of making a change, Mukesh Kumar could come in for Prasidh Krishna. But if you feel Prasidh is confident in the nets, then he should be backed for the second Test," he added.
