2025 has been a tough year for Indian cricketer Shreyas Iyer. After coming close to winning big tournaments twice, he’s been left heartbroken both times.
On Thursday, June 12, Iyer led the SoBo Mumbai Falcons in the final of the T20 Mumbai League 2025. They were up against the MSC Maratha Royals, but unfortunately, lost the match by 5 wickets.
This wasn’t the first heartbreak for Iyer this year. Just a few days earlier, he lost the IPL 2025 final as captain of Punjab Kings, who were defeated by Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

After the match, an emotional Iyer shared his feelings. He said,
“It’s pretty hectic (two finals in 10 days)," Shreyas said after the match, as quoted by Cricbuzz. “Especially when you lose, it runs in your mind a lot. The way everyone turned up in numbers was outstanding to see. The whole stadium was electrifying. Thank you so much for coming and supporting (to the fans)," he added.
When asked about the performance, Iyer said he didn’t want to blame anyone for the defeat.
“Don’t want to pinpoint any particular incident. “Overall the boys were brilliant with their efforts. We just lost one game on the way to the final. Just a one-off game where you can’t pinpoint on anyone – it’s basically backstabbing and I don’t enjoy that. We have learnt a lot. Pretty common to feel dejected after losing the final. It must hurt them," he added.
Shreyas Iyer himself didn’t have a great tournament. He couldn’t score more than 25 runs in any of the five matches. In the final, he made just 12 runs from 17 balls.
Talking about the match, the Falcons batted first and scored 157 runs. Mayuresh Tandel scored an unbeaten 50, and Harsh Aghav added 45 not out. However, Maratha Royals chased the target comfortably, thanks to Chinmay Rajesh Sutar (53) and Awais Khan Naushad (38). They reached the target with 4 balls to spare.
