In the T20 World Cup 2024 final at the Kensington Oval, India's talismanic opener, Virat Kohli delivered a magnificent knock against South Africa, scoring 76 runs off 59 balls.

While the knock was laced with six fours and two sixes, it sparked a whirlwind of debate on social media.

Nasser Hussain reflects on Kohli's 76 in T20 WC final

Virat Kohli began with a bang, dispatching Marco Jansen for three elegant boundaries in the first over—square drive, flick, and straight drive—laying the foundation for what seemed like a vintage performance.

However, as wickets tumbled around him, Kohli found himself in troubled waters, countering a treacherous middle phase. During this period, he was unable to break free, going boundary-less for 37 deliveries and scoring 50 off 48 balls.

Yet, true to his reputation, Kohli surged in the final stretch, amassing 26 runs in his last 11 balls, reigniting India's hopes. But the internet was abuzz with mixed reviews, questioning if this cautious approach was a tactical masterstroke or a costly hesitation.

Former England captain Nasser Hussain weighed in on Virat Kohli’s controversial innings and summed up the debate aptly.

All Depends On The Result: Hussain on Kohli's knock in final

“If India wins then this will be a masterclass by Kohli if they lose then what about 37 balls without a boundary in middle overs? So it all depends on the result that's is it a masterclass or today we're going to see people bashing him for being slow,” said Hussain.

It is worth mentioning that Kohli's tournament run had been lukewarm, with just 75 runs in seven innings before the final. His highest score was a 37 against Bangladesh in the Super 8 stage, raising eyebrows over his form. But as they say, “Cometh the hour, cometh the man,” Kohli rose to the occasion and delivered emphatically.

As fans and critics await the outcome, Kohli's innings will certainly be a topic of discussion in the near future.
