Known for their rich history and legacy, the Chennai Super Kings are having one of their most forgettable campaigns this year. With just three wins, they find themselves languishing at the bottom of the points table.
Despite a tough season, fans are still hoping to see MS Dhoni in action for one more year. But former Indian batter Sanjay Bangar believes it’s time for the legend to hang up his boots.
No Encore For Thala? Bangar Weighs In
Leading the side in the five-trophy win, MS Dhoni has come back again as the captain after Ruturaj Gaikwad was ruled out of the tournament due to injury. But his current stint as a skipper turned out to be a forgettable one. As the season nears an end, speculations over Dhoni’s future are raising concerns.
As fans are asking for one more year of ‘Thala Magic’, former Batter Sanjay Bangar feels it’s time for Captain Cool to call it a day, paving the way for CSK to hit the reset button after a forgettable season.
“I think at 43 it’s very tough to play in that competitive environment. When you’re 43, why this competitive environment, even if you go and play some local cricket, you will find how tough it is on the body as well,” Bangar said on ESPN.
Bangar Mirrors Himself With Dhoni
Putting himself in Dhoni’s place, Bangar thinks Dhoni should take the final call. He added that if he were in Dhoni’s place, he’d call time now, opening the door for CSK’s much-needed transformation.
“It all boils down to MS, but if I were MS, I would say ‘enough’. ‘Okay, I have played whatever I wanted to play, I have looked after the interest of the franchise, if there’s any, if that was the motivation. But, you know, you move on,” Bangar said.
"By you being there, if you’re thinking that the transition will happen fast, there’s never an ideal time to pick. So you might as well [make] peace with the fact that, ‘okay, even if I leave now, the franchise will develop on its own; it will take a year longer, but I’m not going to be here for the entire cycle’. That’s how I would look at MS’ position if I were in that position,” he added.
With 3 victories in 13 games, the Chennai Super Kings are standing in the bottom position with 6 points. With their last match against the Gujarat Titans, they will try hard to end their campaign on a positive note.
