Within just a few months, Indian cricket has entered a new arena. With greats retiring from the longest format, Team India is poised for a new beginning.
After Ravichandran Ashwin retired from Test cricket last year, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli announced their retirements a few days back. Amid the emotional whirlwind, batting coach Vikram Rathour opened up and shared his perspective on the monumental shift.
Rathour Speaks On The Monumental Shifts
For more than a decade, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravichandran Ashwin have been monumental figures in Indian cricket. The batters showcased excellence on the field and the spin king unveiled his spin magic on the field. In between the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Ashwin announced his retirement. But the biggest heartbreaks were yet to come.
As Team India geared up for the England series, Rohit Sharma shocked fans by announcing his Test retirement, soon followed by Virat Kohli. The consecutive exits left everyone stunned. While reflecting on that, Team India’s former batting coach Vikram Rathour called it a personal decision that deserves respect.
“Retirement is a very personal decision. I would love to see all three of them continuing playing. They were phenomenal cricketers and still had so much to offer. But if they’ve taken this call, we must respect that,” he said.
WTC’s Next Chapter Begins Without Test Titans
With three giants stepping away, Team India bids farewell to its strongest pillars in Test cricket. Rohit Sharma was the highest run scorer for India in the WTC, and Virat Kohli stands second. On the flip side, Ravichandran Ashwin is the highest wicket-taker in the WTC.
Keeping the future perspective in mind, Team India is eyeing a new beginning. In Rohit Sharma’s absence, finalising the next Test leader is yet to be done. As the England series kicks off on June 20, a new chapter in Indian Test cricket begins. As India enters a new WTC cycle, the absence of this legendary trio will be deeply felt.
