MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) struggles persisted in IPL 2025 as their top-order faltered yet again during Tuesday’s clash against Rajasthan Royals. Despite promising cameos from youngsters Dewald Brevis and Ayush Mhatre, senior stars Ravindra Jadeja and Devon Conway failed to deliver.

Even MS Dhoni, under immense pressure to revive the innings, managed just 16 off 17 balls, leaving CSK with a modest 187/8. Post-match, Dhoni acknowledged the strain on the lower order due to frequent wickets.

Rajasthan comfortably chased down the target, exposing CSK’s recurring issues with batting collapses and death-over execution. The loss all but confirms Chennai’s last-place finish, amplifying calls for a squad overhaul.

“If you look at the amount of runs we had put on the board, it was very good, but you got to see the wickets column as it puts pressure on the lower-middle order that you might not bat 20 overs. I think Brevis' innings was very nice, he was taking chances, and I feel the run-rate was nice, that's the phase we want to improve slightly. I felt the run-rate was up but where we lacked was losing 1-2 extra wickets," Dhoni said in the post-match presentation ceremony.

The CSK skipper urged batters to prioritize consistency over explosive strike rates. He also gave advice to young batters like Vaibhav Suryavanshi urging consistency over strike rate.

"I think you need to look for consistency, which is hard to get when you are looking for a 200 strike-rate. The batters need to back themselves. What is important is to be the same way as your first season for all young batters. You need to get more consistent that's going to help you to develop as a batsman going forward," Dhoni said.

With the season winding down, and one game left to close, Chennai’s focus shifts to rebuilding around young talent, hoping to avoid a repeat of their 2025 campaign. CSK will face Gujarat Titans on May 25 to sign off from the season.
