CSK players during IPL 2025 [Source: IPLT20.COM]
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) is poised for a bottom-placed finish this IPL 2025 season after slipping to a six-wicket defeat against Rajasthan Royals in Delhi. Despite carting 187-8 in the game upfront, the Royals cruised to a comfortable victory with nearly three overs to spare.
With just three wins and 10 defeats from 13 matches, the MS Dhoni-led group is currently ranked at the bottom of the 10-team standings, holding a dismal NRR of -1.030. Citing CSK’s dreadful run, former Indian opener and ex-KKR star Aakash Chopra is of the opinion that the five-time winners must release seven cricketers ahead of next year’s IPL 2026.
Aakash Chopra urges CSK to release seven players
Former Indian cricketer and expert commentator Aakash Chopra believes the CSK franchise should let go of seven players after the IPL 2025 season. While speaking on ESPNCricinfo, Chopra said that he has a “long list” of players who should be released courtesy of their recent underwhelming performance. He said:
"I would release Ashwin, Jadeja, Rachin Ravindra, Conway, Vijay Shankar, Deepak Hooda, Rahul Tripathi."
Here, we list down all seven players named by Aakash Chopra, along with their stats and figures this IPL 2025 so far:
Players | IPL 2025 stats |
Ravichandran Ashwin | 7 wickets in 9 matches |
Ravindra Jadeja | 280 runs and 8 wickets in 13 matches |
Rachin Ravindra | 191 runs in 8 matches |
Devon Conway | 104 runs in 5 matches |
Vijay Shankar | 118 runs in 6 matches |
Deepak Hooda | 31 runs in 6 matches |
Rahul Tripathi | 55 runs in 5 matches |
CSK will now face table-toppers Gujarat Titans in their final league match of the IPL 2025 season. The match will be hosted by the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, May 25 and the action will commence from 3:30 PM IST onwards.
Another defeat at this stage will pretty much confirm a wooden-spoon finish for the CSK. However, a victory over Gujarat Titans will extend CSK to eight points from 14 matches, thus bringing them on levelling terms with fellow-struggling Rajasthan Royals unit.
