Smith Refutes Test Retirement Speculation!
However, Smith has addressed the speculations and quashed any possibility of quitting Test cricket shortly. While speaking to Fox Sports, the middle-order batter revealed that he does not tend to think far ahead of himself. He always deals with series by series and takes a day at a time into consideration.
“I really just don’t like to look too far ahead. And, you know, I take it series by series, game by game, and just enjoy myself in the moment. I really just don’t like to look too far ahead. And, you know, I take it series by series, game by game, and just enjoy myself in the moment,” Smith said.
Steve Smith added that the legacy stuff can be sorted out later. While people like to talk about his retirement, Smith personally is focused on carrying on business as usual.
Also, as far as his future in red-ball cricket is concerned, Smith reckons he is enjoying the role of vice-captain as he gets to serve the youngsters and pass on the experience.
“I’m not really fussed (about that). Other people can talk about that kind of thing. I just go about my business day by day and just enjoy it. I like to go about my business and, particularly if there are any young players coming through, I want to try and help them where I can," he added.
Overall, Steve Smith is having fun playing test cricket and is absolutely enjoying himself. So far, the thought of calling it quits hasn’t crossed his mind. But the batter turns 35 next year and cannot escape his father's time.
He will have to eventually sort out his priorities and, accordingly, select formats he would love to continue playing. But fortunately for the Aussies, that day isn’t today.
