Bengal and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) all-rounder Shahbaz Ahmed smashed a fighting century in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2023 quarter-final against Haryana on Monday, December 11.

This marked his third century in List A cricket and proved pivotal in Bengal's comeback at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Rajkot.

With Bengal struggling at 93 for five, Shahbaz played a stabilizing role, going for occasional boundaries while forging partnerships with Karan Lal and Pradipta Pramanik. As wickets fell, he gradually increased his strike presence, culminating in a spectacular performance in the final three overs.

In the last over bowled by Rahul Tewatia, Shahbaz achieved his century off 115 balls. Additionally, he contributed to a valuable 52-run partnership for the seventh wicket with Pradipta Pramanik, who played a significant knock of 21 lower down the order.

Despite individual starts by Abhishek Porel, Sudip Kumar Gharami, Anustup Majumdar, and Karan Lal, Shahbaz's century overshadowed their contributions. Leg spinner Yuzvendra Chahal emerged as Haryana's standout bowler, finishing with figures of 4 for 37, while Tewatia and Sumit Kumar claimed two wickets each.

Even with Shahbaz's century, Bengal couldn't secure a victory as Ankit Kumar's hundred propelled Haryana to a comfortable win.

Shahbaz delivered a crucial performance in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2023, breaking his string of low scores. With this century, he has surged to a total of 187 runs in six innings at an average of 37.40, coupled with an impressive record of 11 wickets at an average of 17.18.

As far as Shahbaz's IPL career is concerned, he recently made a move from Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) to Sunrisers Hyderabad for the upcoming 2024 IPL season. In his 39 IPL matches since debuting in 2020 against the Rajasthan Royals (RR), he has accumulated 321 runs with an average of 16.89 and secured 14 wickets at an economy rate of 9.15.

His remarkable century in the Vijay Hazare Trophy underlines Shahbaz's versatility as an all-rounder. The SRH team management must take pride in their decision to include him in the squad.
