Babar Azam was reinstated as Pakistan T20I captain ahead of T20 World Cup 2024, but the results have not gone his way, and Pakistan have been knocked out in the group stage itself after losing to USA and India.

It has brought heavy criticism against Babar Azam and the calls for his ouster have gone loud. He was asked about the same after Pakistan final game of T20 World Cup against Ireland, and Babar was quick to acknowledge that his future is uncertain and whatever happens, it will happen when he returns back to Pakistan.

The talismanic batter added that whatever will be the result, he will declare it openly and will not announce it behind the scenes and everything will be kept transparent for the media.

"When I go back, we will discuss all the things that happened here. And if I have to leave the captaincy, this decision, I will tell you openly. I will not announce anything behind the scenes. Whatever happens, will happen in front of you."

He stated that he has not thought about his future as captain deeply, and the final decision will be taken by PCB. He also mentioned that the decision to bring him back as a captain was taken by PCB and it was his call after the disastrous World Cup in India to leave captaincy.

"I have not thought about it. The decision is of the PCB," he said, asserting that he never asked for a leadership role. About the captaincy – when I had left it (after ODI World Cup), I thought that I shouldn't be doing it now, that's why I left it and I announced it myself. Then when they gave it back to me, it was the decision of the PCB."

Shaheen Afridi is considered as a front-runner to take over the leadership role from Babar Azam and it would be interesting to see how things unfold in Pakistan cricket in the next few days.
