'I Was Disappointed,' ENG Great Slams Ollie Robinson For Poor Bowling In Ranchi Test

Ollie Robinson's priceless half-century down the order for England did little to act as cover for his lacklustre display with the ball on comeback in the Ranchi Test against India as the tall seamer was criticised by former cricketers and prominent faces for his uninspiring spells.

Robinson, whose vital knock of 58 off 96 deliveries at No.9 helped England extend their first-innings total to an imposing 353, proved to be let down at the same time in his primary skill, backing his substantial innings with a costly and overall disappointing 13-over wicketless burst for 54 runs.

It showed the lack of confidence that the pacer inspired in his skipper, Ben Stokes, that Robinson was not given even a single over during the Indian run-chase, where the hosts reached home with five wickets intact and took an unassailable 3-1 series lead.

Atherton Slams Robinson After Sloppy Comeback

More than his poor figures, it's how undercooked Robinson appeared with the ball, playing his first first-class game since return from injury, which became a point of attention for England's critics and even their strong supporters, including former batter and veteran commentator Michael Atherton.

"Ollie Robinson, I was really disappointed with him in this game. I felt that he bowled, his pace was pedestrian, and he was quite down on pace. Obviously scored that half-century, but dropped a catch," Atherton said on Sky Cricket Podcast.

"He was not called upon by Stokes on the last day and he looked like a player who had been out of cricket for seven months. He looks like a bowler who needs a good run of game time now, not necessarily with England either," he added.

Robinson had missed the first three Tests and was included in the playing XI as a replacement for the rested Mark Wood but couldn't provide his team similar control and threat with the ball on an pitch with uneven bounce, meant to suit his height and release points.

The pacer has an overall fantastic record, though, having played 20 Tests for England with 76 scalps attained at an average of 22.92.
