Multan Sultans captain Mohammad Rizwan has finally addressed why he is not keeping wickets in the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2025. Speaking after his team’s first win of the season against Lahore Qalandars on Tuesday, Rizwan told commentator Ramiz Raja that his decision was driven by the motive of communicating more with his teammates.
Rizwan explained that stepping on the field as a fielder has allowed him to move freely around the ground and communicate better with his teammates, boosting their confidence during the high pressure situations in the matches.
Rizwan’s Decision Rooted in Guiding Youngsters
While the Sultans have not had an ideal start to the tournament, this strategic move seems to be aimed at strengthening the team’s overall morale and energy on the field.
“I wanted to be closer to the fielders, to talk to them directly and lift their energy levels," Rizwan said.
Moreover, with several inexperienced players like Ubaid Shah and Akif Javed in the squad, Rizwan chose to be on the field and be around the youngsters to make them stay composed and confident while handling the pressure of playing on such a big stage.
“Our bowling attack includes many young players and I want to guide them during the game, understand what is going on in their minds, and help them stay composed,” Rizwan added.
Notably, Usman Khan has taken over the keeping duties for the Sultans this season and has been impressive behind the stumps. An alternative keeping options who can contribute with the bat like Usman has allowed Rizwan to be more flexible with his decision makings.
Multan’s Uncharacteristic Struggles
Multan Sultans have had an unusually inconsistent start to their PSL 2025 campaign, far from their regular performance in recent seasons. Having lost three of their first four matches, they currently find themselves at the bottom of the points table.
They managed to secure their first win of the season against Lahore Qalandars on Tuesday in front of their home crowd in Multan. The team will now be hoping to build on that momentum, turn things around quickly, and keep their hopes alive for qualification to the knockout stage.
