India's Mohammed Shami, who was seen last in the spotlight during the finale of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023, has been out of the game due to an ankle injury that required surgery in February. His absence has been notable as he missed out on several cricketing events.

Shami, who was recently at the CAB annual awards ceremony, has shown remarkable determination in his return to the game after a four-month hiatus. He revealed that he is focused on improving his fitness to ensure a seamless return and said:

"I am working hard to make a comeback soon because I know I have been out of action for quite some time. I want to ensure there is no discomfort when I return."

Shami On His Ranji Trophy Prospects

Shami, who is a vital member of Rohit Sharma- led India, has 85 Test wickets at 24.61 in the last two WTC cycles, is cautious about his return as he emphasised the importance of a full recovery before rejoining the team. He also later on opened up about playing domestic cricket, like the Ranji Trophy, to test his fitness.

"The stronger I return, the better it is for me. I don't want to rush and risk getting injured again, be it against Bangladesh, New Zealand, or Australia.

If I need to play domestic cricket to test my fitness, I will. What matters most is that I am fully ready for whatever comes next, regardless of the opposition or format," he added.

India's Path To WTC Final

At present, the Indian team are at the top of the WTC chart with a point percentage of 68.52. They still have two Tests at home against Bangladesh, three Tests at home against New Zealand, and five Tests away against Australia. If India wins all or most of these matches, it will reach its third consecutive WTC final at Lord's.

India's next WTC series starts against Bangladesh on September 19 in Chennai, and Shami's return will be eagerly awaited.
