India's premier off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has managed to impress former captain Sunil Gavaskar with his performances in the ongoing three-ODI series against Australia.

Ashwin, included in the side as a cover for injured Axar Patel, is making all the right noise for a last-minute selection in India's World Cup 2023 squad, which starts next month.

In the second ODI at Indore, Ashwin toyed with Australia's middle-order batter, claiming three wickets. Overall, in two matches, the 34-year-old has picked up four wickets and faces stiff competition from all-rounder Washington Sundar, who is sitting on the bench.

Speaking to Star Sports, the 72-year-old backed Ashwin to be included in the World Cup squad if Patel does not regain fitness ahead of the showpiece event.

Here's what Gavaskar said

"The way he has bowled in the last two matches, I think he has made the cut for the World Cup squad. If there is even a hint of doubt on Axar Patel's fitness, whether he'll be completely fit for the entire World Cup; because any injury can be a recurring one and he needs to be careful.

If the team management think they can't take that chance with Axar because it is the World Cup and everyone wants their squad to be 100 percent fit; so if there are any doubts then Ashwin could make a comeback,"

The deadline for making changes to the 15-man WC squad ends tomorrow (Sept 28), after which an ICC approval will be required.

Ashwin will be in action when India takes on Australia in the third and final ODI today at Rajkot.
