The suspense over all-rounder Axar Patel's fitness continues as the World Cup 2023 nears, as off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin dishing out a stellar show in an ongoing One-Day International (ODI) against Australia.

Ashwin's performances could see the lanky bowler sneak his way into India's World Cup 2023 as a last-minute addition if Patel's injury remains a concern. However, former Australia white-ball captain Aaron Finch has claimed that Ashwin will miss the World Cup bus and could be seen in a support staff role for India.

The off-spinner rattled Australian batters at Indore, was recalled into India's ODI team for only the third time in the last six years, and has already won the 50-overs World Cup in 2011 under MS Dhoni.

Speaking to Star Sports, Finch, who helped Australia lift their maiden T20 World Cup in 2021, explained where Team India could utilise Ashwin's experience.

Here's what Finch said

"I think he (Ashwin) might struggle to make it to the final 15, but as somebody who has played so much cricket, I think the rest of the group that is with the Indian team for this current series against Australia, they could learn so much about big gameplay. Because Ashwin is somebody that stands up in big games, whether it's a Test match or a T20 game, he has done it all throughout his career. So I wouldn't be surprised if he's there at the moment as a mentor around the group, but I don't see him making that last 15, unfortunately."

India's leading Test wicket-taker will be expected to take the field in the third and final ODI at Rajkot on Wednesday and make a lasting impression for WC candidacy.
