Despite the drama, the finger-pointing and the whispers around Bangladesh cricket, the current BCB president, Faruque Ahmed has made it clear that he is going to contest the upcoming board elections scheduled for October 2025. In a country where cricket politics often reflects the nation’s political chaos, Faruque’s decision comes with its fair share of heat and headlines.
BCB President Faruque Ahmed Ready To Fight for His Chair Amid Controversy
Speaking on Khaled Mohiuddin’s show Thikana, Faruque made it clear that he is in no mood to quit and run. Faruque, a former Bangladesh player and two-time BCB chief selector, stepped in as board president last August under extraordinary circumstances.
The previous boss, Nazmul Hasan, had to flee the country amidst political unrest and student-led protests. With Nazmul’s resignation and a power vacuum looming, Faruque was handed the reins backed by the National Sports Council. But the ride since then? Far from smooth.
Trouble Brewing Inside The Boardroom
Ever since taking over, Faruque has had to walk a tightrope. His relationship with fellow NSC-appointed director Nazmul Abedin has been under constant strain with Abedin threatening to quit on multiple occasions due to alleged clashes with Faruque’s leadership style.
On top of that, the BCB president’s name has popped up in multiple allegations, from match-fixing whispers to financial irregularities. The board has had to step in more than once to issue statements clarifying the accusations. Still, the rumours have not stopped spinning.
On Tuesday’s episode of Thikana, Faruque didn’t mince his words.
"I think there is a section who had done corruption in the Board and are still trying to demean me. What is the easiest job for them (as I understand) is that if there are four columns written against me based on lies, they think that I am such a man that I will resign. So there is a game that they are playing intentionally and now, I am thinking I will try to fight in the election because the problem will not be solved if I quit," he said.
It’s clear he feels targeted, not just by outsiders but by powerful voices within the BCB ecosystem. And instead of bowing out quietly, he is ready to fight it out at the ballot box.
Staying Coy On The Political Equation
One of the big question marks? Will Faruque still have the backing of the new government, once it’s formed? That is where things get a little murky.
Faruque was appointed during political unrest, not via a full election. And while history says that new governments usually stick with existing BCB presidents to avoid instability, there is no guarantee.
When asked whether he can still hold onto the position if the political winds shift, Faruque dodged the question like a seasoned pro.
"I think you will have to leave it for another episode (future) as you will need time to understand the complexities of the election. All I can say is that if I stay in this position, I will try to eliminate corruption from cricket till my last day," he added.
While October is the official timeline for the elections, word is that some insiders want it to happen earlier. Another group within Bangladesh cricket is reportedly grooming a new face to challenge Faruque for the top job. So, the next few months could get very political, very fast, both on and off the field.
