Indian captain Rohit Sharma has signified the team's current focus as they brace themselves for their upcoming World Cup 2023 semifinal face-off against New Zealand. The cricketer said that most of the players in the team are not concerned about their past achievements, as they are only finding ways to improve themselves in their current pursuit.

Rohit Sharma reflects on players' mindset

During the pre-match press conference, Indian captain Rohit Sharma stated that the current players are only focusing on finding ways to get better, as there is no need for them to be concerned about past achievements.

Sharma said that none of the players in the current team were even born when Kapil Dev and co. lifted the 1983 World Cup, while more than half of the players did not participate in India's 2011 World Cup glory.

Sharma himself was excluded from the team's 2011 World Cup squad, with Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin being the only members in the current line-up reprising their roles from their 12-year-old win.

The Indian skipper said:

“The beauty of this team that we weren't even born when we won the 1983 World Cup. Half of them weren't playing when we won in 2011. I don't see them talking about how we won our previous World Cups. The focus is on how we can get better and how we can improve. That's the beauty of the current crop of players.”

India's much-awaited World Cup 2023 semifinal against New Zealand will be hosted by the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on November 15.

Earlier in the tournament, the 'Men in Blue' romped their way to nine successive wins in the league stage to emerge as the number one side on the World Cup 2023 points table. Rohit Sharma and co. also trounced New Zealand, their imminent opponents, by four wickets and two overs to spare last month at the HPCA Stadium, Dharamshala.

The Indian skipper has led his troops from the front, paving the way for his middle-order to anchor the innings by providing explosive powerplay starts at the top. Overall, the cricketer has tallied 503 runs in the competition so far at an astonishing strike rate of 121.49.
